Not so much Caitlyn, not about our guests themselves, Sara and Brian, but about what they work with. Yeah, they seem lovely. They are lovely. They are from a little place called Unsettling Toy Removal and Rehoming. And wow, I think the name really describes perfectly what you guys do. But let's go a little bit in depth and start by what exactly do you mean by Unsettling?

3:28 Yeah, the name doesn't leave a whole lot of room for interpretation, doesn't it? Yeah. I think by Unsettling we accept any toy that makes someone uncomfortable for any reason. Yeah, it could be, you know, we get toys that dogs bark at, you know, or whatever. That terrifies someone as a child or that we, some of our toys come with like really horrifying back stories. Things like, I don't know, like really bad luck and illness and deaths and like some of them come with these really dark stories. And some of them are like, oh, I thought this looked creepy when I was seven, you know?

4:10 Okay. Any of them come with nosebleed stories? Yes, actually, but we don't have that one in the house today, but yes, absolutely. Oh my gosh. Well, I hope it didn't make its way to Caitlyn's house. But I said it's not in my house. Yeah, it could be anyway. Is it in my house? Oh my gosh. Well, so what started this whole thing? What got you guys into this re-homing service? Well, we're both into like horror film and the macabre and we were just kind of sitting around one day and totally Brian's idea. She's going for it now.

And he just kind of came up with a rough outline of what that might look like. And it was mostly just us running around from house to house, you know? It's a state sale. Getting local people and friends. And you know, tongue in cheek, you know, like, oh, we're going to take your toy and if it acts up or we'll give it back or we know whatever, you know?

5:35 And for my 50th birthday, this one Sarah here, she made the business cards the whole thing really. And surprised me with it. So I was running around Portland downtown Portland, and I'll business cards. So we totally started this with a sense of humor. And I got in these business cards and then he starts giving them out and I was mortified. I was like, stop doing that. That is incredible. It turns serious very quickly. Yeah. And we did not expect this to be a business that there was quite such a demand for. Like we started it with a little bit of a sense of humor and then all these boxes started showing up at our house.

6:19 Like a lot of boxes from all over the world. Yeah. So cool. And also my nightmare. Yeah. Sometimes. It's just, it sounds like a service that Caitlyn would use to get rid of something unsettling and Cassie would use to buy something. Yeah. That happens a lot. Or like someone will adopt something and their roommate will be horrified or like something will come to us because the rest of the family was not being like this item. There's often a lot of dissent within a house. Yeah. It turns it's a perfect business model. You know, some people want the thing and some people want to get rid of the thing and we're just in the middle.

7:04 Yeah. Yeah. Yeah, you're just the middle man. And you do accept returns if something is too unsettling. Sometimes they'll act up, you know, and start running around and we'll gladly take it back. Yeah. We can quite a few people who are like, this is, I thought this was wonderful and I love this toy and I feel a connection to it. However the rest of my family has to come back immediately. Oh my gosh. Well, sometimes I feel like they're, if they're getting re-homed, they've just been uprooted and things are changing. So maybe they just need a little while to settle down into the home.

7:45 They need a little time to love. Yeah. Yeah, a little time in love. But yeah, we have re-re-homed a couple. Well, and there's been a couple instances though. Now that we've been doing this for quite a few years where people have adopted one and kept it in their home and loved it until it wasn't a good fit for them anymore. Like, one person had a baby and was like, I love this toy but it can't be in the house with my baby anymore. And then they sent it back to us to find them a new home, which is neat. We've had that happen a few times where the toy is beloved and was a good fit and is there for years and then comes back. I love that. And then they know it's going somewhere where someone is going to love it too and it's not just going in the garbage.

8:30 Yeah. That's I think that's the main thing. A lot of these have stories and maybe somebody can enjoy it and have a new story with some of these objects. I think Sara's. What's happening? And then sometimes we get stuff like this. Oh my gosh. I love that. The eyeballs move. She has adorable little lips. Look at that. Yeah. That's really what I was focused on. Yeah. Sometimes sometimes they just look creepy. Yeah, sometimes they just look creepy, Caitlyn. It's not all about the looks. Okay. Actually, like what are the scariest ones we've ever had was like the most benign looking new-ish doll.

9:16 It was happening again. What are these weird, I don't know. Riverside get your shit together. You've never, but we have never had that. What fits? A lot of, we had more mic technical difficulties. Okay. I just. What a fun day. I'm not surprised at the particular moment we were talking about that one doll though. Like we've had a couple that so much weird stuff happened that we just send them for free. Like we pay shipping, we pay everything, just like take this, we'll send it to one of our very experienced practitioners and just note them out of here.

How long do you typically recommend, you know, we were talking about a toy that maybe needs to get resettled after they've been re-homed? What's the length of the college try as it were before you know like this isn't for me. You know, we just want people to be comfortable and happy. So whatever feels right to them, some people will stick it out for a long time and be like, this is making me uncomfortable that it just needs a little love and some people will take one look and be like, no, and it comes back.

10:38 Really depends on the family. Yeah. Like don't we don't want anyone being uncomfortable if it's not a good fit. Like get it out of your house. Yeah. Yeah. Stick through the uncomfortable if you're okay with being uncomfortable. Yeah. That's what you were looking for, you know. Yeah. People are like, give me your most evil doll. Give me the worst backstory. I want to experience something like. Like that bag. Really? Sounds like him. Okay. Well, listen. I was just going to say and what's wrong with them, but for like Raven's Manor where your whole thing is having a haunted vibe and they sure got on a doll from you guys, didn't they?

11:23 Oh my gosh. She's a wonderful one. I love that one. She is so-- You have a pleasure in meeting her. Meeting her? I've seen her from a distance from the bar. Yeah, they were seeing that the the shelving she was on collapsed not long ago. Did you hear about that? No. They got on videos. Like the entire shelf of all the bottles just like boom. Yeah. Oh my gosh. I remember a video way back. It was a few years ago or a couple years ago of something happening around her. Oh, it was like another doll fell down. Yeah. No, no. That's what it was. The whole shelf fell down and it's on video.

12:03 It's really shocking. Oh my gosh. I'll have to go find that. Yeah. And kind of not social media in lately. Well, they showed it to us. I don't know if it's on social media or not. Oh, OK. It's a lot. Yeah. That one looked quite well. No. I'll have to bug them again and ask them about it. Maybe they'll come on with us. Yeah. Because we talked about that in September of 2021. We talked about Ravens' Manor. Yeah, I remember. I think you reached out to us at that time. You just did get a little background on her. Yeah. We emailed you guys. I was hearing about the doll I heard where it came from.

12:44 And I was like, what is this amazing business? I need to contact them immediately. And you guys were so nice to respond. And at that point, I hadn't gotten many responses from people. Because we were just like new baby podcasters. But you guys were so nice. And you gave us info that we used in the episode. We would have never had it otherwise. So thank you for that. We've been stalking you ever since. Exactly. And I have almost completely emotionally recovered from that episode. Psychologically, I think, probably not. But... Well, then we got a ghost of summer and you guys are there.

13:25 And then I stick Caitlyn at the booth with all the creepy dolls. With the doll throne, right? Yes. I was trying to remember. Did you do pictures of the doll throne? Yes, we did. And I was holding the lovely little... The little guy doll you had with the. Oh, yeah, yeah. Kappy? Yeah. I held him for so long. And I really, he was just like warm and felt so good in my arms. And I didn't want to give him back. But I knew that he wasn't mine. He has had effect on people, first of all. Yeah. Yeah, he likes attention. Yeah, he does. Yeah, he gets right into it. So is he one of your personal dolls?

14:06 Or is he for sale? Yeah, no, he's in our permanent collection. But we do have... We do have this guy. Oh, he's handsome. He looks pretty good, right? What? What are those teeth? He has a really fascinating backstory. There was a second hand shop in Portland that burns down. And the owners tried to get in. And it was unsafe and condemned at that time. And so the authorities wouldn't let him in to get any of the stuff. And that night, he's... People came in and stole everything from the burns building. Oh, no. And then they took the stuff, including him, and took what they wanted, and then dumped the rest in bridal veil at the gorge.

14:54 You know where that is? Oh, come on. Sort of a... You know what? And they dumped it on the side of the road and a man who lives on the hill in bridal veil has seen people steal things and dumped them on the side of the road there. And he went down and gathered the stuff and tried to figure out what they were and where they came from. And was able to contact the owner, but there was no... By the time he found who it was, they weren't able to take them back. Anymore, the store was gone. And it was too late. So the man just took the toys and kept them safe in his garage. And then when they saw us on the news, they contacted us. And now a lot of the toys have actually gone full circle to back and have been adopted by people who wanted them back when they were at the second hand shop.

Maybe that's his name, crazy legs. Crazy legs. Crazy legs. Crazy legs, Mj. I don't know why that was so alarming that his legs are long.

16:58 I do sometimes these dolls. I try to like think about, well, if I made it all. And I have no talent whatsoever. I know that like it would end up with either crazy, crazy long arms that would... Or, you know, something would be completely wrong. And so I always wondered like, how do these get made, you know? Like, who approved some of these? Yeah. He mentioned people in a boardroom like, well, these legs aren't long enough. Yeah. Make them longer. Yeah. Listen, they were already late to lunch and they needed to get this show on the road. Exactly. That is so funny. They had their teamies to get to.

Well, she's going to be in a fantastic mood for the foreseeable future. Yeah, I am. Sure. So you're giving a doll name. Yeah. You ever have opinions like we love it.

18:20 Oh, I have opinions on names. Let me tell you. She really does. I like to name everything and I like to ask it what its name is and let it tell me. Well, this was a very special moment. Yeah. I was so cool. Yeah. I was so excited. I love it. What is the most unsettling toy that you guys have come across? There's been a couple. I can talk about Claudia if you want. Okay. Yeah. Claudia's one that we no longer have. Poor Claudia was sitting on a little girl's dresser and fell off and snapped its leg just under the knee. Oh, no. And the girl that same week broke her leg in the same spot, same leg on a trampoline.

19:08 Nope. Nope. I just got to go. Right. Yeah. 100% parents were like, well, that's crazy. So they put it into a closet and the little girl kept her name being called from the closet. And so the parents took it and sent it off to us without even telling us any of the stories. They were afraid like maybe we would learn story and didn't want it. Yeah. We're like, you're here. They wanted to tell the story until we had her like in our house. Oh my gosh. So just as far as the story goes, it's creepy. And then I did something really stupid.

19:48 I did some stupid stuff because I want to know what happens sometimes. I took its leg and I moved it to my car, you know, in the back seat behind me. Of all the places you don't put something that you have questions about, like don't put it in your car. Seriously. I sometimes I make mistakes. Oh no. I'm worried. I'm worried. But me. It's okay, but it's okay. It's not say who the made the mistakes. Yeah. So it was sitting in the back there and my back seat windows started rolling down on their own. Yeah. I saw it. It's like for real.

20:29 It was crazy. And he was like, look, it's doing it. Like he was nowhere near any of the controls. And like the back window was rolling itself down. Yeah. Yeah. And I know obviously I yelled at him a lot. Yeah. And it took me a while to take it out. Yeah. Put things off. Yeah. Yeah. The ADHD of it all. You know. You know. You know. Once I took it out, no more car thing. Never happened again. Yeah. No more car thing. It just, you know. So you don't think it was like an electrical or wiring issue with your control. Like it never did it again. It did a lot of times. It was. And then it stopped. So that was really. It could be. It could be anything. It's just one of those things that makes you think like, oh no.

21:11 Yeah. Like, is it a coincidence or am I doing something I should be doing? It was the doll. Yeah. So where did it end up? That went to one of our very experienced clients. We have quite a few clients who take in classes and like are very professional about their handling of objects that could have attachments. And it went to one of those. When we have one of those situations where, you know, weird stuff is happening, then we're careful to make sure that the toy goes to an appropriate household. Like that one would never go to a home where there was a child. You know.

21:51 Oh, that's good. Very responsible. It's for the best. Yeah. And I just know you guys have some value. Would you say it's bubble wrap? I assume it was bubble wrap. I mean, you don't want anything else breaking off of her. Right. You never know. You never know. Right. Definitely, definitely bubble wrapped up. Yes. And it's enjoying its new home. We hope. Make a noise. Have you heard anything bad? Yeah. Actually, we keep hearing back from people about that doll, not just the owner, but she's gained a bit of a following and like people reach out to us trying to get information about the new owner and about the doll.

22:35 Like it's quite a ride. Like we get contacted fairly regularly by investigators and teams and detective people, who fancy themselves to be detectives. The ghost musters. Like it is just an ongoing saga. Then we have one that look like a famous cartoon character. Yeah. That was just completely benign and everything just went to hell and a hand basket when that thing got to my house. Like really weird stuff. Like probably the weirdest one is I had bought like some sort of food for the kids that I was warming up.

23:16 It was like a key shirt, something that had a little bit of eggs in it. Have you ever seen a video of if you microwave a hard boiled egg? Have you ever seen those videos? No. They like explode. Like hardcore explode. Like scary explode. You have to look it up. Because I didn't know that was a thing, but apparently this food that I was making for my kids had like an egg yolk that had been unbroken in it. It was like a prepared food. That's not a thing that's supposed to be able to happen. But I microwaves this like lovely healthy food for my kids and it freaking exploded. Like exploded exploded. Like I took it out of my phone. Like bam. Look at videos of what happens if a hard boiled egg explodes.

23:57 When you took it out it exploded. Yes. It burns like it was really scary. That was like, and then like there was a lot of illness and just like that luck and my car quit carring like it went all the heck. So we just said like hey you want this one? Well, I think the whole time too it was laughing in the corner at this. Stop it. Stop it. Staring and laughing at us. Right. Well, and how did you hear it? And Brum and had much worse luck than we had. Like so many things went awry. So that one was just and it was just a super benign looking like friendly talking cartoon character. And it was bad news.

It's just like so scary. I'm settling eight dot go. Well, something happened with my eggs before. Do you remember that? Yes. When I was I worked in a house that we thought was haunted and they threw my they were hard boiled eggs across the floor. Like I had set them on the counter and made sure they weren't rolling.

But then I went back and I was trying to get the egg to roll off the counter and it would just roll in the opposite direction. She was trying to reproduce it. I was trying to recreate. For science. Yeah, for science. No, so that's weird. Why is it attacking everyone's eggs? What is it that's inherently evil about the hard boiled eggs? It's weird. There's something going on. They're delicious. They're they are. Yeah. Maybe they're just mad that they can't enjoy eggs anymore. I don't know. But did you guys see I swear to God I know her ears are inside of the headphones, but I feel like I could see her ears parking up when you mentioned classes.

26:06 Yes. What are these classes that you think? What some of the people do just like workshops and things at the conventions around, you know, divining or communication things. Oh, okay. We've also had some contact. There are a couple of university programs in paranormal studies or what was the official. There was one university on the East Coast where someone actually contacted us for a thesis. And it was like majoring in the science pieces of paranormal investigations. It was like the smartest conversation ever. It was so awesome. Wow. About people's interpretations and people's perceptions and sensory stuff and going back to college.

And then she loves them so much that she actually drove them up from like Central California to hand deliver them. Wow. And so they're a boy, if we're going by appearances. She was really loved. And we work really hard to never change the stories that the toys come to us with because we don't want to put anything through our own lens or own filter. We really try to be respectful of whatever people tell us about them.

We also have people do remote readings quite a bit where we'll set up a video call or something and then they'll do a reading of a toy to see if they feel that it has attachments or history or whatever. And then sometimes we'll do pop-up shops or events like where we saw you guys and people really enjoy sort of interacting with the toys at those.
